Optimizing School Readiness for Children with Developmental Disabilities
About this Research Topic
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent the aspirations and commitments of the 193 Member States to advance population health, well-being, and security globally. This global agenda not only seek to reduce under-5 mortality to 25 per 1000 by 2030 (SDG 3.2) but also requires the monitoring of the proportion of children under 5 years who are developmentally on track in health, learning, and psychosocial well-being (SDG 4.2.1) to facilitate access to inclusive and equitable early childhood education. Available evidence suggests that globally, newborns are at least ten times more likely to be disabled than to die in the first five years of life. This Research Topic seeks to contribute to the development of a roadmap for optimal early childhood development for children with developmental disabilities in readiness for appropriate and effective primary school enrolment. Additionally, this Research Topic will strive to raise public awareness and stimulate remedial action on the risk of long-term sub-optimal health, development, and the well-being of the beneficiaries of the massive global investment to reduce under-5 mortality since the year 2000 who reside in low- and middle-income countries.
